Clinic Details:Homeless individuals are up to six times more likely to get sick than the general population. Compounded by lack of access to quality healthcare, chronic illness creates instability that makes it difficult to secure housing and employment. The shelter-based clinics located in our Third Street, Fort Washington, New Providence, and Williams Avenue shelters serve homeless adults from all over New York City. Our physicians provide compassionate care and no one is turned away, regardless of their ability to pay. Services include diabetes testing, depression and substance abuse screening, HIV testing and viral load suppression, tobacco cessation, and detox treatments - all crucial for the population we serve. Addressing these health issues give homeless individuals a chance to get back on their feet. Additionally, since homeless individuals visit the emergency room an average of five times a year at a cost of $3,700 per visit, our clinics allow more efficient, effective use of healthcare resources by reducing non-urgent ER use and preventable hospitalizations. Our primary care program is accredited by the National Committee on Quality Assurance (NCQA) as a Patient-Centered Medical Home.

Details: The Institute’s Healthcare for the Homeless Program provides services at six locations in Manhattan. Our program makes health care services easily accessible to people experiencing homelessness. We provide medical care, behavioral health care, discounted medications, and referrals to other services. Details: The School Health Program - Family Health Centers at NYU Langone provides medical, mental health, and dental services, along with health education, directly to children and adolescents through clinics located in public elementary, middle, and high schools throughout New York City. We care for children when they are sick, but also provide the preventive medical care to keep them healthy. By operating clinics inside schools, we help ensure that healthcare is accessible and convenient for children and families. A healthy child misses fewer days of school, which makes it easier to keep up with schoolwork and succeed academically. Also, when a child is healthy, his or her parents miss fewer days of work. School-based clinics are staffed by at least one nurse practitioner who can write prescriptions, order diagnostic tests for illnesses such as strep throat, and help manage chronic conditions including asthma and diabetes. The health team includes physician assistants, nurse practitioners, social workers, psychologists, health educators, medical associates, and patient services associates. Our dentistry program is staffed by a dentist and dental hygienist. Although insurance is billed for visits when appropriate, visits to the school-based health center lead to no out-of-pocket costs to families.
