  • Imani Clinic
    • Location: Sacramento, CA - 95817 | 0.7 mile away
    • Contact Phone: (916) 475-9582
    • Details: Imani Clinic was the brainchild of UC Davis medical students in the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), an organization dedicated to improving outcomes--medical, academic, and social--among members of the African-American community. Ten years of planning, research, and negotiations were initiated because students became concerned about the staggering and persistent morbidity and mortality from hypertension, heart disease, cancer, and inadequate prenatal care among African-Americans. SNMA redoubled its efforts in light of the apparent demise of Health Care Reform, and the serious threat to universal access to health care posed by Proposition 187. The clinic opened on October 22, 1994, in the heart of the Oak Park neighborhood in South Sacramento. This site was selected because of the ethnic diversity of the community--recent census data indicates that 57 percent of the population are members of minority groups and 80 percent of this community can be classified as working poor or unemployed. Most of these people have no health insurance. "Imani" is the Swahili word for "faith," and symbolizes the trust we hope to foster within our community that the health care system will address their medical needs and social realities. Imani Clinic is open every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and we generally see 10-15 patients--usually, at least half are Spanish-speaking. Unlike the other clinics, we run as a "weekend extension" of the Sacramento County primary care facility. The clinic is staffed by undergraduates who do intake (checking height, weight and vital signs), lab work and create patient charts, and by medical students who see patients under the supervision of 1-2 preceptor physicians. Clinic affairs are managed by the undergraduate board which works under the supervision of 4 medical student co-directors.

  • Paul Hom Asian Clinic
    • Location: Sacramento, CA - 95819 | 1.4 miles away
    • Contact Phone: (916) 736-3966
    • Details: The Paul Hom Asian Clinic is the oldest existing Asian clinic in the United States. In 1971, a group of UC Davis medical students led by Paul Hom held meetings with a group of activist undergraduate students from the California State University of Sacramento to discuss improving health care for the elderly Asians of Sacramento. The students saw that many of the elderly Asians as well as the new immigrant families were struggling to obtain adequate health care due to socioeconomic and language barriers and decided to start a free clinic to target this problem. Dr. Lindy Kumagai, one of the few Asian medical faculty members at the time, consented to become the medical director of the clinic and made arrangements with the UC Davis Department of Community Health to establish the Asian Clinic as an elective course for medical and undergraduate students. Since 1972, the Asian Clinic continues to serve the Asian community in downtown Sacramento every Saturday, except during holidays including Chinese New Year. Dr. Paul Hom had an untiring commitment to the clinic and to its purpose in serving patients of all ages in the Asian community who lack adequate healthcare due to cultural, linguistic, or economic barriers. Healthcare continues to be provided at no charge to all patients. The existence of the Paul Hom Asian Clinic has proved beneficial not only to the patients, but also to the undergraduate students, medical students, and physicians who volunteer their time and efforts. The legacy of Dr. Paul Hom continues to thrive.

  • Elica Health Centers - Midtown
    • Location: Sacramento, CA - 95816 | 1.6 miles away
    • Contact Phone: (855) 354-2242
    • Details: At Elica Health Centers, “Healing with Heart” is more than just a slogan - it is the guiding principle behind everything we do. We are proud of our roots, which trace back to 1979 and the establishment of a small group practice that served the primary care needs of the region's emerging immigrant communities. Today, Elica stands as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), a designation given by the Federal government to community-based clinics that meet a rigorous set of requirements. Our mission is to provide high quality, affordable health care through the operation of professional and compassionate health homes for underserved populations, who are confronted with barriers to accessing care. Elica boasts a network of eight health center facilities located in both Sacramento and West Sacramento, which collectively provide services for nearly 20,000 individuals who account for over 70,000 visits annually. Approximately 10% of Elica's patients receive care outside our clinic walls through the Wellness Outside Walls (WOW) initiative, which includes our Street Medicine and Health on Wheels (HOW) programs.
