  • Details: A Woman’s Place (AWP) is the only 24-hour supportive residential services in San Francisco offering emergency shelter and long-term treatment programs to women and transgender women with special needs due to mental disabilities, sexual or domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, and HIV+/AIDS-related issues. A Woman’s Place also accepts victims of sexual assault and domestic violence as well as transgender women and elderly individuals with special medical needs. Some of the specialized programs include a shelter program, an 18 month transitional housing program, the CARE program for primarily African American women and transgender women with HIV, and a substance abuse program. Services also include health care, mental health counseling, case management services, and money management. The facility serves all women, catering to the chronically homeless who are most at risk and serving individuals other agencies turn away. Emergency housing is provided to single women without children, the LGBT and HIV/AIDS communities, those who experience mental illness, domestic violence, and substance abuse. AWP serves adult women of all ages and ethnicities who feel they have nowhere else to go. At A Woman's Place, individuals receive the structure and support needed to attain permanent housing, a stable income, and if possible, gainful employment.

  • Details: The Sanctuary (201 Eighth Street), formerly The Episcopal Sanctuary, provides emergency shelter to homeless adults who register through the City of San Francisco. The Sanctuary is a 24-hour facility and provides two meals a day to shelter residents. ECS collaborates with the nursing school of San Francisco State University and SFSU nursing students and faculty offer drop-in clinic hours for Sanctuary residents three days a week. ECS's behavioral health team, known as SF START, also provides behavioral health services for residents at The Sanctuary and other San Francisco shelters. Many Sanctuary clients are homeless seniors. Seniors have designated shelter beds and earlier access in order to provide extra time and space for evening preparations. Homeless seniors often have chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes, and the Sanctuary works to accommodate their nutritional needs in the breakfast and dinner meals. During the day, homeless seniors can enjoy programs and a hot lunch at the ECS Senior Center.

  • Details: The UCSF Student-run Homeless Clinic is comprised of UCSF medical students, medical residents, and physicians, as well as undergraduate volunteers from USF. We have served a diverse group of homeless and transiently-housed people in San Francisco since 1992. The clinic is located in the Multi-Service Center South, a shelter run by the St. Vincent De Paul Society of San Francisco, and serves shelter residents there from 6-9pm on most Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Care is provided by a team of first and second-year medical students together with a UCSF physician or resident. Services provided include urgent care, TB testing, dermatological care on some clinic days, and community resource referrals.

Built in 1909, the Windsor Hotel is a six story, 94 unit Single Room Occupancy (SRO) Hotel, with 49 private bath units, 41 communal bath units and 2 programmatic units. The Windsor also offers on-site supportive services available to all residents. The Support Services team is staffed by the Dept. of Public Health and includes a Support Services Director, a team of Case Managers and an on-site Nurse. DISH Property Management staff work in conjunction with the Support Services team to help tenants successfully maintain their housing by being a responsible lease-holder and member of the building community. Together, the Windsor Property Management team and Support Services team put on a variety of community activities each month, announced in a monthly Event Calendar. Some common activities are BINGO, arts & crafts, a monthly birthday celebration and a community meeting. In addition to activities and events, the Support Services team coordinates weekly free food distribution for tenants through Food Runners as well as an array of outings such as trips to the Civic Center Farmer’s Market, Alcatraz Island and various local museums.
