Originally founded in 1985 as Health Care for the Homeless Project (HCHP), HCHP provided primary health care services to homeless individuals and families that resided in local emergency shelters or on the streets of the District of Columbia. In 1997, HCHP officially changed its name to Unity Health Care as care expanded from serving people experiencing homelessness to providing primary and specialty care to District residents. Over the past three decades we have grown into a network of over 20 traditional and non-traditional health centers and a medical outreach mobile unit. As reflected in our history, Unity is more committed than ever to further unify services in convenient and accessible health centers to make our families and communities healthier.

This team is truly greater than the sum of its parts, and includes doctors, nurses, social service providers and an administrative support team. During the last few years, our program has diversified and expanded our relationships. Last year, with the very generous support of partners and collaborators like Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Washington DC, CVS/Caremark Charitable Trust, The Joseph E. & Marjorie B. Jones Foundation, the Michele Snyder Foundation, the Clark-Winchcole Foundation, and the W. O’Neill Foundation, we have been able to bring more services to more children in need. All children ages 0-21 are eligible for our program whether or not they have medical insurance. Additionally, we also treat patients who have Medicaid coverage, but who do not have a regular doctor or pediatric clinic. There are no out-of-pocket expenses to patients or their families. Five days a week, the bright white KIDS Mobile Medical Clinic - Ronald McDonald Care Mobile drives into federally designated health professional shortage areas (HPSAs) and offers comprehensive general pediatric health care services at five different sites and comprehensive adolescent health care services at a two additional sites. The first four sites are located near seven public housing areas with an estimated 2,000 underserved children. Our fifth site is located at an Emergency Homeless Shelter.
