The “Healthy Kids Express” is a mobile health care center sponsored by South Bay Family Health Care that provides immunizations, well-child exams and care for sick children weekly at a variety of schools, Head Starts, community events and health fairs. Designed to minimize the anxiety children often face when visiting the doctor, the van is brightly decorated in “kid-friendly” colors and designs. Despite its non-threatening appearance, though, the van is a fully equipped medical office: It’s 38 feet long and has two complete exam rooms, each with exam table and all the features necessary to conduct pediatric exams. The van also has two refrigerators and freezers on board, one for lab specimens and one for medication and vaccines. Additionally, the van is equipped with a back-up generator, oxygen tank and fire extinguishers.
