The Norma Jean Sanders Free Clinic is held weekly on Fridays at Kenwood United Church of Christ, providing medical care to uninsured and under-insured persons, free of charge. Current Free Clinic hours are Fridays from 9 am to 1 pm, with sign-up from 9 to noon. The Free Clinic is a health care ministry of Kenwood United Church of Christ. Founded as the Kenwood Free Clinic by Rev. Dr. David Stewart (MD, DMin), Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. Leroy Sanders, and Faith Community Nurse Rev. Yoruba Siddiq Brewer in 2001, the clinic was renamed the Norma Jean Sanders Free Clinic in 2006 in honor of the beloved late First Lady of the church. The Free Clinic provides care for numerous acute and chronic medical problems, including hypertension, diabetes, and asthma. We also provide foot care through the services of Rev. Roger Dart, professional pedorthist. The clinic has been supported though generous donations from Advocate Health Care, The Hyde Park-Kenwood Interfaith Council, Trinity United Church of Christ, The Congregational Church in Deerfield, United Church of Hyde Park, Lincoln Memorial Congregational United Church of Christ, and many other congregations and individuals. Through this loving support, the Free Clinic provides free medications for many health conditions and free laboratory testing through Advocate’s ACL laboratory. In addition to care provided by Dr. Stewart, clinic patients are served by volunteer nurses and medical assistants, by Family Medicine resident physicians from Advocate Christ Medical Center, nurse practitioner students from University of Illinois-Chicago, and medical students form Rush University. The Norma Jean Sanders Free Clinic provides compassionate and free health care services to all who seek them, respecting all persons, and regardless of race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or sexual orientation. Dr. David Stewart is the Director of the Norma Jean Sanders Free Clinic.
