Capstone Rural Health Center opened in June 2001 as a nurse-managed center and operated as a Certified Rural Health Center until 2007 with a goal to deliver family centered, quality primary health care to rural areas. This was made capable by the University of Alabama, Capstone College of Nursing, and Professor Dr. Jeri Dunkin; the initial funding was received from the Division of Nursing, Bureau of Health Professions, Health Resources and Services. Capstone Rural Health Center became a Federally Qualified Health Center under Section 330 of the Congressional Public Health Service Act in 2007. Capstone serves Walker County, Alabama and surrounding area populations by providing comprehensive primary care services that treat illness, as well as promote & maintain health. Capstone incorporates prevention and health promotion, treatment of illness, and management of chronic diseases - often all during the same visit.
