Clinic Details:The mission of the Berkeley Free Clinic is to empower individuals and communities by providing accessible, client-centered health services and information. Since the Clinic opened, there has been an ever-present, albeit dynamic, need for its services as social conditions have undergone shifts and changes. It has become something of an icon in the area, and has served countless thousands in a variety of ways during its 45-year history.
Details: In July 1997, the Berkeley Chaplaincy to the Homeless began a drop-in center for homeless youth that now serves 20-50 youth per day. Their services include food, recreation, counseling, advocacy and health care. This program has been extremely successful at establishing trust with the youth and providing needed services. In 1998, the Chaplaincy approached the Suitcase Clinic, a UC Berkeley-sponsored, student- and volunteer-run organization with a request to assist in the establishment of a homeless youth-focused health services clinic and drop-in center similar to the existing Suitcase Clinic sites. The Suitcase Clinic and several other organizations worked to recruit a multidisciplinary team of volunteers and paid staff to provide health and social services, advocacy, and counseling together under one roof for a weekly evening drop-in center for homeless and street-identified youth. Over $10,000 in funds were secured for the Youth Clinic project and partners have made commitments to participate in this effort. The Suitcase Clinic was proud to open the doors to its Youth Clinic in September of 2000, making it the most recent of our drop-in centers. The Youth Clinic strives to provide culturally appropriate and youth accessible services to homeless and street-identified youth which simultaneously increases their opportunities for positive social and physical well-being.
Details: The General Clinic is the oldest of the Suitcase Clinic’s three drop-in centers targeting low-income and homeless populations in Berkeley, receiving up to fifty clients per night on average. For over twenty years, the General Clinic has been a safe and successful place for homeless individuals to receive medical or other professional services, to pick up hygiene supplies, to talk to a lawyer, or just to hang out with Berkeley students.
Details: The idea for the Women’s Clinic began in fall of 1996. During that time, there was steady discussion of specifically reaching out to women and children, who normally comprised a minority at the regular Tuesday night General Clinic. The reason for this most likely stems from the fact that the General Clinic is open during the evening, and is therefore unsafe or inconvenient for that particular population to utilize. In an effort to address these concerns, a expansion of the General Clinic was put into place on Monday afternoons at the Berkeley Free Clinic drop-in center. After a semester-long trial run, it was found that the new ‘Expansion Clinic’ was not accomplishing its original goals. Following a six month hiatus of re-planning, the new drop-in center was re-opened at the Dwight Way Women’s Shelter in the spring of 1998.
