About this clinic

Volunteers in Medicine Jacksonville, Inc. was established in 2002 by co-founders James Burt, MD and Dottie Dorion, RN, MS and opened its doors for patients in September 2003 — one of 94 Volunteers in Medicine clinics across the United States. All Volunteers in Medicine clinics are free clinics, but not all are dedicated to treating the working poor. The Jacksonville clinic is at the corner of Ocean St. and Duval St. in the old Paulus Music Store. The building was rehabilitated to a clinic shortly after incorporation through private donations and volunteer craftsmen. Ms. Dorion and Dr. Burt’s reason for starting the clinic was that there were healthcare options for low or no income individuals that did not work, but no options for hardworking people who did not have access to medical care. The mission of Volunteers in Medicine Jacksonville is to provide free outpatient primary and specialty medical services to Northeast Florida’s WORKING, low-income and uninsured individuals and families to keep them healthy, employed and out of our hospital emergency rooms. The Volunteers in Medicine Jacksonville Clinic is staffed by dedicated active and retired physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and specialists. These professionals dedicate their time to fulfill our mission of helping our community’s working uninsured. Our success can be directly attributed to the passion and commitment of more than 230 active volunteer clinical and non-clinical professionals that perform a wide array of services at our downtown clinic five days a week.

Is this clinic actually free?
Often not entirely. "Free clinic" usually means one of three things: a volunteer clinic with no charge, a community health center with a sliding fee scale based on household size and income, or a clinic that charges a small flat visit fee. What if I have no income at all?
Most sliding-scale programs have a lowest tier for people with no income, and many accept a signed self-declaration when you have no pay stubs to show. What should I bring to a first visit?
Usually a photo ID, something showing your address, proof of income or a self-declaration, your insurance or Medicaid card if you have one, and a written list of your current medications and doses. Call ahead — requirements vary, and arriving without the right paperwork is the most common reason a first visit gets rescheduled.
Do I need insurance, or immigration documents?
Federally funded health centers serve patients regardless of insurance status and do not require proof of citizenship to provide care. Volunteer and charitable clinics set their own rules. If it matters to you, ask before your visit what they require and what they record.
Is dental care included?
Usually not, and this is the single most common disappointment. Dental is frequently a separate program with its own eligibility, its own waiting list, and a narrower service list — extractions and urgent pain may be covered while fillings, crowns, root canals, and dentures are not. Confirm that dental is offered at this specific location before travelling.
Can I get a prescription refilled here?
Most clinics require an appointment before they will refill anything, and a first appointment can be weeks out. If you are close to running out of a medication you cannot safely stop, say so when you call — say the medication name and how many days you have left. Ask your pharmacy at the same time; pharmacists can sometimes authorise a short emergency supply.
What if I need care today?
