About this clinic

As one of the leading community health care providers in St. Louis, Family Care Health Centers is dedicated to providing comprehensive primary health care services to the residents of St. Louis. With two state-of-the-art facilities in the metropolitan area, Family Care also works to improve the overall health of the communities it serves by reducing barriers to health care. Family Care provides care at a third site located within Places for People.Comprehensive health care is provided regardless of one’s health insurance status. Family Care accepts private, Medicaid and Medicare insurance plans. To bridge communication gaps with non-English speaking patients, staff provides interpretation services for Hispanic, Bosnian, Vietnamese, and Somali patients and uses outside resources for patients speaking other languages.Family Care Health Centers offers patients convenience, quality and innovation in primary care. Our Providers use evidence-based medical care to address your physical and mental health needs. We coordinate your care across multiple care settings – visits to sub-specialists, the ER and the hospital. Through our exchange of information we help you better understand your medical conditions and provide the education and tools you need to take charge of your health. Our Health Centers offer convenient hours of operation including 24 hour access to physician telephone consultation for emergencies – all part of FCHC’s commitment to being your “Health Care Partner For Life”.

Is this clinic actually free?
Often not entirely. "Free clinic" usually means one of three things: a volunteer clinic with no charge, a community health center with a sliding fee scale based on household size and income, or a clinic that charges a small flat visit fee. A sliding scale can still leave a bill. Ask what the lowest tier costs before you book.
What if I have no income at all?
Most sliding-scale programs have a lowest tier for people with no income, and many accept a signed self-declaration when you have no pay stubs to show. Ask for the clinic's discount program by name and ask what proof they take. Being told "bring proof of income" does not mean you are turned away for having none.
What should I bring to a first visit?
Usually a photo ID, something showing your address, proof of income or a self-declaration, your insurance or Medicaid card if you have one, and a written list of your current medications and doses. Call ahead — requirements vary, and arriving without the right paperwork is the most common reason a first visit gets rescheduled.
Do I need insurance, or immigration documents?
Federally funded health centers serve patients regardless of insurance status and do not require proof of citizenship to provide care. Volunteer and charitable clinics set their own rules. If it matters to you, ask before your visit what they require and what they record.
Is dental care included?
Usually not, and this is the single most common disappointment. Dental is frequently a separate program with its own eligibility, its own waiting list, and a narrower service list — extractions and urgent pain may be covered while fillings, crowns, root canals, and dentures are not. Confirm that dental is offered at this specific location before travelling.
Can I get a prescription refilled here?
Most clinics require an appointment before they will refill anything, and a first appointment can be weeks out. If you are close to running out of a medication you cannot safely stop, say so when you call — say the medication name and how many days you have left. Ask your pharmacy at the same time; pharmacists can sometimes authorise a short emergency supply.
What if I need care today?
