About this clinic

Henrietta Johnson Medical Center (HJMC), a Federally Qualified Health Center with sites located in both Wilmington and Claymont Delaware, provides an all-inclusive range of Medical and Dental services for the entire family. HJMC offers caring, quality healthcare for Women, Children, Adolescents, Adults and Seniors. HJMC participates with most major insurances, including Medicaid and Medicare, but we understand that some of our patients do not have current healthcare insurance. Patients in need of health care will never be turned away here at Henrietta Johnson Medical Center; we offer a sliding fee scale to patients without health insurance based on the patient’s income and family size. Community Health Centers like HJMC has been recognized as a cost-effective and necessary alternative to emergency room-based primary healthcare services. We are here to serve our community and ensure better health for our patients regardless of their ability to pay.

Last time i went to hjc, this was many many years ago. I had a wicked toothache. I was scared to deathof course. dr numbed my mouth, not quite enough as i found out later when he was pulling & pulling. He put his knee in my leg to get a better grip.by now the novocaine was wearing off. I was shaking & crying.He showed me my tooth. yes, it was big but not alot of the tooth was decayed??? Then, he sent me out to waiting rm without anything for pain. My friend looked at me.omg!! are you ok? I was sweaty,no color in my face, shaking like a leaf, ready to pass out!!! I will never forget that day. mouth full of cauze. i couldnt even drive home. I pray that dr is not there anymore. cuz i got to go bk. my face is swollen twice its size. even my eye is swollen.. HELP

Is this clinic actually free?
Often not entirely. "Free clinic" usually means one of three things: a volunteer clinic with no charge, a community health center with a sliding fee scale based on household size and income, or a clinic that charges a small flat visit fee. A sliding scale can still leave a bill. Ask what the lowest tier costs before you book.
What if I have no income at all?
Most sliding-scale programs have a lowest tier for people with no income, and many accept a signed self-declaration when you have no pay stubs to show. Ask for the clinic's discount program by name and ask what proof they take. Being told "bring proof of income" does not mean you are turned away for having none.
What should I bring to a first visit?
Usually a photo ID, something showing your address, proof of income or a self-declaration, your insurance or Medicaid card if you have one, and a written list of your current medications and doses. Call ahead — requirements vary, and arriving without the right paperwork is the most common reason a first visit gets rescheduled.
Do I need insurance, or immigration documents?
Federally funded health centers serve patients regardless of insurance status and do not require proof of citizenship to provide care. Volunteer and charitable clinics set their own rules. If it matters to you, ask before your visit what they require and what they record.
Is dental care included?
Usually not, and this is the single most common disappointment. Dental is frequently a separate program with its own eligibility, its own waiting list, and a narrower service list — extractions and urgent pain may be covered while fillings, crowns, root canals, and dentures are not. Confirm that dental is offered at this specific location before travelling.
Can I get a prescription refilled here?
Most clinics require an appointment before they will refill anything, and a first appointment can be weeks out. If you are close to running out of a medication you cannot safely stop, say so when you call — say the medication name and how many days you have left. Ask your pharmacy at the same time; pharmacists can sometimes authorise a short emergency supply.
What if I need care today?
