About this clinic

Our mission is to provide free primary health care to the uninsured. We deliver that health care through operation of a mobile care vehicle that has a fixed schedule in four distinct neighborhoods across the City of Hartford. Coupled with coordinated communication efforts at schools, homeless shelters, parishes and churches, community outreach and ready access to those who are most in need is assured. The Malta House of Care Mobile Medical Clinic has been key in responding to the plight of the uninsured in the Greater Hartford CT region for the past ten years. Through a dedicated cadre of physician, nurse and non-medical volunteers, the Malta House of Care Mobile Medical Clinic has provided over 40,000 patient visits over that time period with 2,000 individuals identifying Malta House of Care as their only medical home. We have received special recognition as a major source for the provision of safety net health services in the Greater Hartford Region. This is evidenced by the recognition we have received from the Hartford City Council and the Office of the State of Connecticut Healthcare Advocate, as well as being selected as Connecticut’s Ashoka Green Mountain Coffee Changemaker representing the best example of social responsibility and achievement. We are grateful for the strong financial and in-kind support we receive from all corners of our community. Most importantly, our impact is gauged by those who are most in need: through the profound gratitude of individual patients who now experience access to healthcare and the resulting positive health outcomes.

Is this clinic actually free?
Often not entirely. "Free clinic" usually means one of three things: a volunteer clinic with no charge, a community health center with a sliding fee scale based on household size and income, or a clinic that charges a small flat visit fee. What if I have no income at all?
Most sliding-scale programs have a lowest tier for people with no income, and many accept a signed self-declaration when you have no pay stubs to show. Ask for the clinic's discount program by name and ask what proof they take. Being told "bring proof of income" does not mean you are turned away for having none.
What should I bring to a first visit?
Usually a photo ID, something showing your address, proof of income or a self-declaration, your insurance or Medicaid card if you have one, and a written list of your current medications and doses. Call ahead — requirements vary, and arriving without the right paperwork is the most common reason a first visit gets rescheduled.
Do I need insurance, or immigration documents?
Federally funded health centers serve patients regardless of insurance status and do not require proof of citizenship to provide care. Volunteer and charitable clinics set their own rules. If it matters to you, ask before your visit what they require and what they record.
Is dental care included?
Usually not, and this is the single most common disappointment. Dental is frequently a separate program with its own eligibility, its own waiting list, and a narrower service list — extractions and urgent pain may be covered while fillings, crowns, root canals, and dentures are not. Confirm that dental is offered at this specific location before travelling.
Can I get a prescription refilled here?
Most clinics require an appointment before they will refill anything, and a first appointment can be weeks out. If you are close to running out of a medication you cannot safely stop, say so when you call — say the medication name and how many days you have left. Ask your pharmacy at the same time; pharmacists can sometimes authorise a short emergency supply.
What if I need care today?
