About this clinic

Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) provides healthcare to low-income, working adults who live in Central Oregon and have no medical insurance or means to pay for care. We use a community approach, where 200+ in-clinic volunteers and over 300 local medical partners collaborate to provide patients with necessary primary and specialty medical care, prescription medications, and mental health care. Our patients are contributing members of our community and have included construction tradespeople, hospitality workers, fast-food employees, ski instructors, artists, small business owners, river guides, landscapers, ranchers, bicycle mechanics, self-employed entrepreneurs, home health care workers, daycare providers, hairdressers, retail clerks, craftspeople, part-time employees, and students, just to name a few. VIM's patients are ages 19 and older. The majority have one or more chronic condition such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, or a mental health diagnoses. All of these conditions are manageable with medical oversight and access to care. This is where we come in. At VIM, patient costs of about $100 per visit are funded by patient donations along with local and regional individual, corporate and foundation supporters. Because of the dedicated efforts of our volunteers, every $1 raised is leveraged 6.86 times, generating over $100 million in care since we opened in 2004. There are many ways to become involved with VIM – as a patient, volunteer, community medical partner, or donor. Our work is far-reaching, positively affecting employees, employers, families, and other local support services. Is this clinic actually free?
Often not entirely. "Free clinic" usually means one of three things: a volunteer clinic with no charge, a community health center with a sliding fee scale based on household size and income, or a clinic that charges a small flat visit fee. A sliding scale can still leave a bill. Ask what the lowest tier costs before you book.
What if I have no income at all?
Most sliding-scale programs have a lowest tier for people with no income, and many accept a signed self-declaration when you have no pay stubs to show. Ask for the clinic's discount program by name and ask what proof they take. Being told "bring proof of income" does not mean you are turned away for having none.
What should I bring to a first visit?
Usually a photo ID, something showing your address, proof of income or a self-declaration, your insurance or Medicaid card if you have one, and a written list of your current medications and doses. Call ahead — requirements vary, and arriving without the right paperwork is the most common reason a first visit gets rescheduled.
Do I need insurance, or immigration documents?
Federally funded health centers serve patients regardless of insurance status and do not require proof of citizenship to provide care. Volunteer and charitable clinics set their own rules. If it matters to you, ask before your visit what they require and what they record.
Is dental care included?
Usually not, and this is the single most common disappointment. Dental is frequently a separate program with its own eligibility, its own waiting list, and a narrower service list — extractions and urgent pain may be covered while fillings, crowns, root canals, and dentures are not. Confirm that dental is offered at this specific location before travelling.
Can I get a prescription refilled here?
Most clinics require an appointment before they will refill anything, and a first appointment can be weeks out. If you are close to running out of a medication you cannot safely stop, say so when you call — say the medication name and how many days you have left. Ask your pharmacy at the same time; pharmacists can sometimes authorise a short emergency supply.
What if I need care today?

For something urgent but not an emergency, an urgent care clinic or a hospital emergency department must evaluate you regardless of ability to pay.
