Affordable Daily Dental Care and When to Seek Treatment

Learn daily habits that protect teeth and gums, what home care can and cannot do, and where to find affordable dental treatment when needed.

Daily home care helps lower the risk of tooth decay and gum disease, but it cannot repair every dental problem or replace professional treatment.

A useful routine includes fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between teeth, limiting frequent sugar exposure, avoiding tobacco, and arranging dental care based on individual needs.

Brush and Clean Between Teeth

Brush twice daily for about two minutes with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Clean between teeth with floss, interdental brushes, a water flosser, or another dentist-recommended method.

Limit Frequent Sugar Exposure

Reduce frequent sipping or snacking on sugary foods and drinks. Water is usually a better between-meal beverage.

Ask Before Using Mouthwash

Mouthwash can help some people, but not every product is appropriate. Ask what it is intended to treat, whether it contains fluoride, and whether it could worsen dry mouth.

Avoid Tobacco and Protect Against Injury

Tobacco increases the risk of gum disease, tooth loss, delayed healing, and oral cancer. Use a properly fitted mouthguard for sports.

Manage Dry Mouth

Dry mouth can increase decay risk. Ask about medicine review, fluoride, saliva substitutes, hydration, or sugar-free gum. Do not stop medicine without guidance.

Know When Home Care Is Not Enough

Contact a dental professional for persistent pain, swelling, bleeding gums, loose adult teeth, broken teeth, mouth sores that do not heal, fever with dental symptoms, or difficulty chewing.

Finding Affordable Dental Care

Look for community health centers, dental schools, dental-hygiene schools, Medicaid or CHIP dentists, public-health clinics, and charitable programs.
