About this clinic

The Clinic was established in 1993 through the efforts of our local medical society, hospitals, businesses and religious organizations in order to address a growing need for medical services for those who fell through the cracks of the local healthcare delivery system. In the early 1990s, local hospital leaders saw people repeatedly visiting the emergency departments for complications of chronic diseases and illnesses because they could not afford office visits and medications and had no insurance coverage. They pulled together a group of community visionaries who believed everyone deserved quality healthcare without the barrier of cost. After touring the Will-Grundy Medical Clinic in Joliet, IL, Dr. Robert Reardon, Sr. and the committee brought this free clinic model back to McLean County and they created the Community Health Care Clinic. The Clinic began as a 100% volunteer-run clinic and saw its first patient in March 1994.

Is this clinic actually free?
Often not entirely. "Free clinic" usually means one of three things: a volunteer clinic with no charge, a community health center with a sliding fee scale based on household size and income, or a clinic that charges a small flat visit fee. A sliding scale can still leave a bill. Ask what the lowest tier costs before you book.
What if I have no income at all?
Most sliding-scale programs have a lowest tier for people with no income, and many accept a signed self-declaration when you have no pay stubs to show. Ask for the clinic's discount program by name and ask what proof they take. Being told "bring proof of income" does not mean you are turned away for having none.
What should I bring to a first visit?
Usually a photo ID, something showing your address, proof of income or a self-declaration, your insurance or Medicaid card if you have one, and a written list of your current medications and doses. Call ahead — requirements vary, and arriving without the right paperwork is the most common reason a first visit gets rescheduled.
Do I need insurance, or immigration documents?
Federally funded health centers serve patients regardless of insurance status and do not require proof of citizenship to provide care. Volunteer and charitable clinics set their own rules. If it matters to you, ask before your visit what they require and what they record.
Is dental care included?
Usually not, and this is the single most common disappointment. Dental is frequently a separate program with its own eligibility, its own waiting list, and a narrower service list — extractions and urgent pain may be covered while fillings, crowns, root canals, and dentures are not. Confirm that dental is offered at this specific location before travelling.
Can I get a prescription refilled here?
Most clinics require an appointment before they will refill anything, and a first appointment can be weeks out. If you are close to running out of a medication you cannot safely stop, say so when you call — say the medication name and how many days you have left. Ask your pharmacy at the same time; pharmacists can sometimes authorise a short emergency supply.
What if I need care today?
This directory cannot arrange care or pass a message to a clinic. For a medical emergency call 911. For a mental health or suicidal crisis call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). For something urgent but not an emergency, an urgent care clinic or a hospital emergency department must evaluate you regardless of ability to pay.
