About this clinic

The CARES Clinic is a non-profit organization providing free medical care to uninsured patients aged 18 and older in the local Charleston area since 2005 (those insured under Medicare or Medicaid do not qualify). It is operated and managed by professional students of MUSC for the opportunity to learn about medicine and the inter-workings of a free clinic. At CARES, medical, pharmacy, and PA students follow licensed physicians who are volunteering their time to care for our patients. The CARES Clinic was awarded the 2015-2016 "MUSC Gives Back - University Wide Organization Community Volunteer Award for Student Organizations" for the second year in a row. In addition, the CARES Clinic Spanish Night was awarded the 2015-2016 "MUSC Gives Back - College of Medicine Community Volunteer Award for Student Organizations."

Is this clinic actually free?
Often not entirely. "Free clinic" usually means one of three things: a volunteer clinic with no charge, a community health center with a sliding fee scale based on household size and income, or a clinic that charges a small flat visit fee. A sliding scale can still leave a bill. Ask what the lowest tier costs before you book.
What if I have no income at all?
Most sliding-scale programs have a lowest tier for people with no income, and many accept a signed self-declaration when you have no pay stubs to show. Ask for the clinic's discount program by name and ask what proof they take. Being told "bring proof of income" does not mean you are turned away for having none.
What should I bring to a first visit?
Usually a photo ID, something showing your address, proof of income or a self-declaration, your insurance or Medicaid card if you have one, and a written list of your current medications and doses. Call ahead — requirements vary, and arriving without the right paperwork is the most common reason a first visit gets rescheduled.
Do I need insurance, or immigration documents?
Federally funded health centers serve patients regardless of insurance status and do not require proof of citizenship to provide care. Volunteer and charitable clinics set their own rules. If it matters to you, ask before your visit what they require and what they record.
Is dental care included?
Usually not, and this is the single most common disappointment. Dental is frequently a separate program with its own eligibility, its own waiting list, and a narrower service list — extractions and urgent pain may be covered while fillings, crowns, root canals, and dentures are not. Confirm that dental is offered at this specific location before travelling.
Can I get a prescription refilled here?
Most clinics require an appointment before they will refill anything, and a first appointment can be weeks out. If you are close to running out of a medication you cannot safely stop, say so when you call — say the medication name and how many days you have left. Ask your pharmacy at the same time; pharmacists can sometimes authorise a short emergency supply.
What if I need care today?
This directory cannot arrange care or pass a message to a clinic. For a medical emergency call 911. For a mental health or suicidal crisis call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). For something urgent but not an emergency, an urgent care clinic or a hospital emergency department must evaluate you regardless of ability to pay.
