Finding affordable healthcare can feel confusing because providers use terms such as free clinic, charitable clinic, community health center, low cost, and sliding scale. These terms do not always mean the same thing.

A clinic may provide selected services at no charge, offer discounts based on income, accept Medicaid or other insurance, or charge separately for tests, prescriptions, dental procedures, and referrals.

A free clinic is generally a nonprofit or charitable healthcare organization that provides eligible patients with some or all services without charge.

Some organizations use the broader term free and charitable clinic because they may request donations, charge a nominal amount, or use a sliding-fee approach while still making essential care available to people who cannot otherwise afford it.

There is no single national eligibility rule for every free clinic. Each clinic sets its own requirements based on its mission, funding, services, staffing, and local community needs.

Free clinics and community health centers both help people access healthcare, but they are not the same type of organization.

The better option depends on your location, insurance, income, service needs, and appointment availability.
